Safe Work College was established in 1990 to provide high-quality occupational health and safety training. Over the past 18 years over 40,000 students, employer representatives and workers have gained additional knowledge and skills through their participation in occupational health and safety courses provided by the college.

Premier launches Zero Harm at Work

The Zero Harm at Work Leadership Program was recently launched by the Honourable Anna Bligh MP, Premier of Queensland and the Honourable Cameron Dick MP, Attorney-General and Minister for Industrial Relations.

This program has been promoted by the WHS Board and WHSQ as a ten year strategy to promote safety culture and will involve workplace CEO champions, benchmarking, assistance and community awareness through advertising such as the Homecomings series.

ABC NEWS: Asbestos campaigner Shirley White dies

The founder of a support group for sufferers of asbestos-related disease has died in Brisbane. Shirley White founded the Queensland Asbestos Related Disease Support Society in 1989 when her husband developed asbestosis. She received the Order of Australia in 2003 for her advocacy work. She died from leukaemia at the age of 73.

ABC NEWS: '15-hr mining shifts 'will cause more accidents'

The miners' union says there will be more fatigue-related accidents in Queensland as some mining companies extend shifts to up to 15 hours. Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) spokesman Tim Whyte says Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance's (BMA) standard hours-of-work policy allows employees to work up to 80 hours per week. He says these work hours do not include commute times from places like Mackay or Sarina. Mr Whyte says accidents will increase. "I think it's only inevitable with the hours that our coal miners are being asked to work and the pressure they're being put under," he said.
